Ausjet Aviation Group entered into a joint operation with the Australaian Navy to provide a target towing solution for training purposes out of Victoria. The relationship established and still remaining has been operating since 1996. To facilitate such a service, our engineering department was tasked with modifying a Piper Navajo twin engine aircraft with a winching cable system. The system is driven by an external propeller which is directed into the airflow and in turn drives the winch in and out. The cable is some 6,000ft long with a target attached as the point of reference for the guns to aim at.
The successful execution of the contract saw a renewal at the end of the initial five-year contract term and then subsequent renewals to date. Ausjet Aviation Group continues to provide the service of our PA31 Navajo and experienced pilots for target towing exercises with the Australian Navy.
